My Weekly Commitment to Youtube
Every time I make a new youtube video it feels like an extremely unpolished version of myself gets released to the world. I believe that if I get comfortable in front of the camera it’ll unlock something new and bring opportunities my way. The problem I continue to face is that being in front of the camera is so uncomfortable I find every reason to avoid it. Not to mention once I’m actually done with that process I still have to edit which is just the worst. Watching and listening to yourself over and over again is so exhausting. I hate going through a bunch of clips and photos to add to a video that no one watches and I barely even like. Then you have to work on the thumbnail too if you want anyone to watch it. Do you know how annoying it is to make a thumbnail!? Ahh Serenity now!
Whats my solution to all this? I decided to make one video a week for the next two months and see if I feel any different. For this to work it has to be the most basic style video, something I can shoot and edit within a day. Similar to a podcast style and we all know there’s not enough of those floating around. I’m going to pick a topic that deals with being a photographer and just talk about it to the camera with no script. SIMPLIFY EVERYTHING! I’ll use my phone to record, wireless lav mics for the sound and make them all in black in white so I don’t have to worry about the colors. No b-roll footage since it’ll just cause more friction. I’ll adjust whatever I need to along the way.
The goal of this isn’t necessarily to gain a ton of followers..trust me! I’d Love them but I know an unknown photographer yapping away at the screen isn’t the best strategy for that. I’m hoping the weekly exercise will give me a new perspective on my approach to gaining more comfortability in front of the camera. I need to either fully let the idea of youtube go or commit to a certain degree so this is me committing.
The first video is about the Struggle of Self Promotion. Feel free to check it out below and follow the page as well!
